Two easy ways to make your alkaline water are:
  1. Add a tea spoon of lemon or lime juice to your glass of purified-filtered water, or half to one lemon to 1/2 gallon of drinking-purified water.
  2. Add 1/4 teaspoon of backing soda to a gallon of purified-filtered water. This method is widely use by cancer patients to get the body’s pH balanced to alkaline.

During Treatment
Focus on eating a balanced diet. Nutritionist advises 9 portions of protein intakes to keep your strength & immune system up during treatment.

  • ·         Choose whole grain breads and cereals.
  • ·         Limit or No Dairy Products (Milk, Yogurt & Cheese)
  • ·         Drink 100% fruit or vegetable juices. (Make sure they are pasteurized because you may be more susceptible to germs while you’re getting cancer treatment.)
  • ·         More vegetables and fruits.
  • ·         Snack on carrot sticks, sweet pepper slices, and fresh or dried fruits.
  • ·         Have a leafy green salad with dinner.
  • ·         Limit sugary foods -- the kind with lots of calories but very little nutrition.

Try to Eat, Even If You Don't Have an Appetite
Lack of appetite is common during cancer treatment. Some treatments can even make food taste unpleasant. "Even though you don't feel like eating, it's important to get adequate nutrition,"

  • ·         Choose high-calorie, nutrient-rich foods such as avocados, nuts, beans, seeds, puddings, and cooked cereals.
  • ·         Eat small meals throughout your day.
  • ·         Don’t wait until you're hungry to eat. Instead, eat at certain times of day.
  • ·         Keep your favourite foods close at hand.
  • ·         Make your meals look appealing. Add parsley, lemon slices, cherry tomatoes, and other colorful garnishes to your plate.

Ease Side Effects with Food
Certain foods can help ease the common discomforts from cancer treatment.

  • ·         Conquer constipation by drinking water (3litres) and eating high-fiber foods like beans, lentils, vegetables, and fresh or dried fruit.
  • ·         Drive away diarrhoea with bland foods such as brown/purple rice porridge, bananas, and apples. Drink water to stay hydrated.
  • ·         Protect mouth sores and avoid dry mouth by grinding or pureeing foods to make them easier to swallow. Or eat foods that are already soft and mostly liquid, like soups and soy milk or fruit shakes.
  • ·         Nix nausea by choosing bland foods and foods without strong odors. Steer clear of greasy foods. Go easy on your stomach by eating small meals throughout the day. Drink plenty of water even if you are vomiting.

Focus on Food Safety
Some cancer treatments temporarily weaken your immune system. So it’s important to avoid germs that you can pick up from food. Contaminated food can make you quite sick. Here are some guidelines to help keep you safe.

  • ·         Avoid cracked or unrefrigerated eggs. Eggs to be kept in the fridge
  • ·         Don't buy bulk foods from open bins, like salad greens.
  • ·         Keep all perishable foods in the fridge until you're ready to prepare them.
  • ·         Prep your food on surfaces that are cleaned with soapy, hot water.
  • ·         Use a separate cutting board separated from the cutting meat. Wash it thoroughly after each use.
  • ·         Scrub and rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Don’t eat any fruits or vegetables that you can’t wash easily, such as raspberries. Scrub the outsides, even if you don’t eat them, like the rind of a melon.
  • ·         No preserved & processed food

EXERCISE

If you have been recently diagnosed with cancer or are undergoing treatment, it’s important to take special care of yourself. Studies show that one of the best ways to do this is to stay physically active.

That doesn’t, of course, mean you should run a marathon or scale a mountain. But it’s wise to add some form of regular exercise to your daily life--even during cancer therapy. Moderate aerobic exercise, such as riding a stationary bicycle or taking a daily walk, coupled with the use of light weights for strength training, can enhance physical well-being and spur recovery.

  • ·         40 minutes slow jog followed by
  • ·         45 minutes  walking daily

An effective exercise program has three components:

  • ·         An aerobic workout that pumps up your heart rate. Examples include brisk walking (outdoors or on a treadmill), jogging, swimming, or bicycling.

  • ·         Strength training to tone and build muscles. This includes lifting weights or working with a machine circuit or resistance bands. (Be sure to get instruction if you’re new to this type of exercise; light weights are sufficient to maintain strength.)

  • ·         Stretching to keep muscles and joints limber.

Your goal should be at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five days a week or more. But be cautious: if you try to do too much, you may become discouraged and stop exercising altogether. On the other hand, if you were a regular at the gym before cancer, you may have to lower the intensity of workouts for awhile.

Here are some additional suggestions:

  • ·         If you don’t have the energy to exercise a full half hour, break it up; try three 10-minute walks during the day.

  • ·         Make exercise enjoyable; recruit a walking partner or listen to music with headphones while on a recumbent bike or treadmill.

  • ·         Dress comfortably and drink plenty of water.

  • ·         Warm up by swinging your arms or marching in place and cool down with gentle stretches.

  • ·         Do some gardening or house cleaning – both provide physical workouts.

  • ·         Consider yoga and tai chi; though not aerobic, they integrate movement and meditation and enhance wellness.

  • ·         Look for programs designed for cancer patients. Some health clubs and hospitals offer exercise classes that address the challenges and needs of people with cancer.

  • ·         If on radiation therapy, avoid swimming pools; they can expose you to bacteria that may cause infections and the chlorine may irritate radiated skin.

  • ·         Listen to your body; don’t exercise if you’re not feeling well or running a fever.

DENTAL CARE

During Treatment
Patients should understand that good oral care during cancer treatment contributes to its success.

Advise patients to

  • ·         Brush teeth, gums, and tongue gently with an extra-soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste after every meal and before bed. If brushing hurts, soften the bristles in warm water.
  • ·         Floss teeth gently every day. If gums are sore or bleeding, avoid those areas but keep flossing other teeth.
  • ·         Follow instructions for using fluoride gel.
  • ·         Avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol.
  • ·         Rinse the mouth with a baking soda and salt solution, followed by a plain water rinse several times a day. (Use 1/4 teaspoon each of baking soda and salt in 1 quart of warm water.) Omit salt during mucositis.
  • ·         Exercise the jaw muscles three times a day to prevent and treat jaw stiffness from radiation. Open and close the mouth as far as possible without causing pain; repeat 20 times.
  • ·         Avoid candy, gum, and soda unless they are sugar-free.
  • ·         Avoid spicy or acidic foods, toothpicks, tobacco products, and alcohol.

Provide recommendations for treating dry mouth and other complications:

  • ·         Sip water frequently.
  • ·         Suck ice chips or sugar-free candy.
  • ·         Chew sugar-free gum.
  • ·         Use a saliva substitute spray or gel or a prescribed saliva stimulant if appropriate.
  • ·         Avoid glycerin swabs.
  • ·         Take precautions to protect against trauma.
  • ·         Provide topical anaesthetics or analgesics for oral pain.
